Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials ran across the track directly in front of him

The dangerous situation took place on the third rotation when track officials were observed on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an quick visit to the pits to replace his damaged front wing

Racer's Instant Response

Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"

"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"

"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two guys running across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"

Track Safety Questioned

"Obviously there's been a miscommunication at some point but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We cannot comprehend how on a live track safety personnel can be authorized to just run across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but this absolutely cannot recur"

Governing Body Reviewing

The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the situation

"Following a turn one incident, race control was informed that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the FIA

"During the third lap, marshals were alerted and put on alert to enter the track and recover the debris once all cars had passed"

"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch marshals were rescinded and a double yellow flag was displayed in that section"

"Our inquiry continues what happened after that point"
